A defining Day in the county championship

Was Wednesday the 11tg September the day Somerset claimed the county championship? At the end of day 2 in Somersets and Essex’s game, they both had differing fortunes. Somerset are leading Yorkshire by 356 runs by 5 wickets. However, Essex trail Warickshire by over 450 runs and to add insult to injury Alistair cook is already out. For Somerset, they claimed Yorkshire’s last 6 wickets in 42 balls. They collapsed from 86-3 to 103-9( Coad unable to bat due to illness.) Somerset were on the verge of undoing their good work when they slipped to 4-2 but, with 5 different batsmen contributing everyone stood up. Abell digging in for a captains knock of 62 Hildreth and Banton both hitting counter attacking 58’s and 43’s respectively. Then Bartlett and Gregory combined with 34 and 48 to take Somerset into a very strong position. With a lead of 365, they may already have enough. Essex had to toil for almost 2 days in the field with young Warickshire batsmen hitting 173. They have an uphill task to not lose and winning would be a true miracle. Somerset, however, have the game all but won.

  1. Somerset have indeed put themselves in a strong position. The may yet be a place in test tour party this winter for Tom Abell – England have to acknowledge that they are short of players who can play long innings against the red ball – and such innings, as he demonstrated again yesterday are Abell’s forte.
