Australia push on on day 2

A high-class double century by Smith powered Australia to 497-8 declared. However, England was sloppy and wasteful. Smith was dropped on 65 by Jofra Archer and was caught off a Jack Leach new ball on 118. Furthermore, Paine was dropped twice. As Australia reached 400 England were progressively sloppy. Mitchell Starc came in and bludgeoned a 49 ball 50. England also lost Denly and anger the day on 23-1. England is still in this game and the ashes, however. The pitch is a relatively flat one and there are only 3 days left. If England can get past the follow on the score they will probably not win due to the time in the game. However, England’s batsmen have to stand up and be counted. Tomorrow is a big day for the ashes summer…

  1. Yes today is the key day for England’s Ashes chances – if their first innings is still in progress at the end of it they will probably be just about safe. If England are all out at some stage today, then depending on exactly when that happens Australia will either go for the quick kill by enforcing the follow-on or go in again hell bent on scoring quick runs for a second declaration. The first task is for Denly, Overton and Root between them to stay in long enough that by the time Roy comes to the crease the ball has aged a bit.
