How England won the world cup Final

Coming into it both teams were unchanged. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first. New Zealand made a streaky start with Guptill charging down the pitch first ball. Then Nicholls referred an lbw decision that was given out. It was overturned. Guptill having settled down was then lbw tow Woakes missing a big shot. New Zealand 29-1 after 6.2 overs. They slowed up and at the end of the powerplay were 33-1. Nicholls and Williamson rebuilt with a Partnership of 74 taking New Zealand to 103-2. Williamson out caught behind for 30. A key wicket from Plunkett. Henry Nicholls kept batting well and brought up his 50 off 71 balls in the 26th over. Very good innings. Then Plunkett got him a very good 53 but he was bowled off a very good ball. New Zealand 118-3 in the 27th over. Latham to join Taylor. They put on 24 before Taylor on 15 was adjudged lbw. This was of woods the first ball of his new spell. neesham joined Latham. He started with intent. He hit a positive 19 in combination with Latham before he fell. Chipping another cross-seam Plunkett delivery to mid off. New Zealand in trouble 173-5 off 39 overs and in need a partnership. Plunkett bowled out in the 41st with the super figures of 3/41. Jofra back into the attack. Grandhomme came in and clogged up 28 deliveries getting 16. He never looked comfortable and chipped the ball straight up to mid on. Woakes 2nd. New Zealand 219 For 6 with 19 balls left. England bowled well from here restricting New Zealand to 241-8. A brilliant all-round bowling performance from all the bowlers. It’s game on but England is favourites here.

England made a nervy start with Roy nearly being given out the first ball of the innings. He was saved by umpire’s call. Roy fell caught behind off Henry for 17 leaving England in a bit of bother at 28-1. Bairstow was batting well though and Root joined him. With Bairstow on 18, Grandhomme dropped a simple caught and bowled chance. Could this be a big moment? Well, root followed after looking scratchy with his 7 runs coming off 30 balls. 59/2 at drinks. Morgan joined Bairstow with a partnership needed. That isn’t what they got. They only added 13 before Bairstow chopped on. Ferguson’s ball was just a bit to close to cut. England still on top though with the run rate below 6. Morgan fell with a great catch from Ferguson who had roughed him up with a few short ones the previous overs. Morgan out Butler in England 86-4. Butler and stokes put an assured 50 partnership in 65 balls. They need to go on though. At 138-4 neesham missed a simple enough run-out opportunity. Stokes would have been gone. Off the last 10 overs, England needed 72 with Stokes on 43 and Butler on 42. Butler reached his fifty with 55 off 40 needed. An outstanding knock by the Somerset man. In the same over Stokes brought up his fifty off 81 balls. But let fell for a run a ball 59 with them still needing 46 off 31. In came Woakes. In the final 4 overs, England needed 39. Nail biting stuff. But with the first ball of the next over Woakes was out. Ferguson with the wickets. In came Liam Plunkett. 3 overs 34 needed. The first ball went for 4 a good hit from Stokes, 1 then 2 a dot. Boundary needed. 24 were needed off two overs. Just the one to start, then another one then Plunkett caught in the deep. 22 off 9. It went high and boult caught it but stepped on the rope. 16 off 8. Archer was bowled 15 off the final over. Boult to bowl to Stokes. Dot Dot 6.9 off 3. 2 stokes dives it hit him and went for 4. 3 of 2. A runout 2 of 1 needed. 1 and a super over. Ben Stokes is a legend the best innings in a while for England.

  1. We didn’t win the match. We didn’t win the Super Over. That 6 that went along the ground! New Zealand didn’t deserve to lose. But somehow we get the trophy. I’m not criticising, I just can’t fathom it!

There should be more days like that, available to all! Hopefully today can be a wake up call for those who run cricket in our country and keep sending out surveys asking why participation is down and why kids don’t recognise cricketers. Well done England, just but we’ll take it!
