Woakes 3-20 and a blistering 85 were the key to Englands 8 wicket win. But this was not just down to one person it was a complete team performance. Stokes and Butler didn’t bat but Butlers run out stopped Smith possibly propelling Australia to 250 and taking the momentum with them. Stokes wood and Plunkett all met at under 6. Not all of your bowlers have to take wickets.
England made a dream start with Archer getting Finch out for a duck. Woakes backed him up with two wickets. Australia 14-3. Carey had his helmet smashed off by Archer but he and Smith rebuilt well. Then at 118-3, Carey was caught in the deep of Rashid then Stoinis fell LBW to the same bowler. Australia 118-5. They never really pushed on and were all out for 223. Smith with 85 was the only notable score.
England also made a dream start with the bat. Roy and Bairstow took on the quick’s and then dominated the spinners. Steve Smith came on as a last chance saloon. You hit for 4 ginormous sixes. Then against the run of play, Bairstow was LBW to Starc. Then Roy had to go after a terrible caught behind decision down the leg-side. England 147-2 and 155-2 after 20 overs. Still in control. Morgan and Root comfortably saw England home with 45 and 49 respectively.
A great team performance and England are favourites heading into Sunday.
