Somerset faced up against Hampshire at the county ground. Somerset won the toss and chose to bat on a good pitch.
Azhar Ali was out early but a big partnership between Hildreth and Abell set the tone. Taking them from 18-1 to 196-2. Then when Hildreth, who made a chanceless 106, and Abell, who made a captains knock of 82, fell Bartlett and Banton combined. Banton hit 79 and Bartlett 68 in a partnership of 116 to take Somerset up to 353-4. Up to there, it had been somersets’ day. But Abbott had other ideas ripping through the lower middle order. Somerset falling from 353-4 to 408 all out and Abbott finishing with a five-wicket haul.
Hampshire ’s 349 all out was based off a 101 run stand between Rahane and Northeast. The latter hitting a superb 101 and Ajinka hitting 54. Good lower order 30’s and 40’s helped them to there total. Jamie Overton bowled well with 5 wickets.
Somerset started positively with a 128 opening stand between Azhar and Abell. Azhar hitting 79 and Abell 58. The same middle order pairing of Banton and Bartlett combined taking the score from 165-3 to 260-4. Banton out with 70, Bartlett 68. Then some late order hitting propelled Somerset to 358-8 when they declared. Hampshire needed to score 417.
They needed a good batting unit but that isn’t why they got. Losing wickets at regular intervals to great Somerset bowling and fielding. Only to people past double figures and they were 104-9 with Weatherly Absent injured.
This moves Somerset 15 points clear and, moves Hampshire to 4th.
