It happened

England lost to Australia. It was a clinical performance from Australia and England were a bit sloppy in the field. One thing that came to mind was Jos butlers missed stumping of Adil Rashid. This was not a big mistake as Usman only went on to get 23. It was just that getting him out quickly would have created more pressure on Smith. England started terribly with Vince showing that he is not good enough at this level. Bairstow and Morgan looked in and for out before Butler, who had batted well in combination with Stokes, holed out for 25. The rest of the lower order batting was not what we expected. England has been praised for there lower order depth but when we needed it they choked. The only positives for England going into there final deciding games are Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes. Ben Stokes was outstanding yesterday and like against Sri Lanka and Pakistan contributed with bat and ball. He is in this will massively help in there next two games against India and New Zealand. What next for England?

It is still in their own hands Roy comes in for Vince and Tom Curran comes in for Rashid who for me has underperformed. It’s simple if they win there next to games they are through. It won’t be easy but it’s certainly possible.

  1. Agree with most of your assessment. England now need to win both their remaining games to have a realistic chance of progressing. That in turn means that Vince has be dropped immediately, whether he is replaced by playing a slightly injured Roy, or by having one of Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes or Joe Root move up to open.

  2. Yeah, even if Roy isn’t fit, given that Moeen is only meriting selection with the ball he may as well open the batting. He can’t do any worse than Vince. Then Tom Curran can come in.

Vince would’ve been better not being in the squad and playing CC instead. This will cost him an Ashes place. I also think that it’s been confirmed that Roy isn’t fit enough for Tests. He’s had injuries for a while now and if he’s off the field in Tests he won’t be allowed to open the batting (As per the rules) thus compromising the whole point of his selection. Unless he bats in the middle but then we’ve still got to find openers or push players that don’t want to go up up.
