The county championship so far

Hampshire have been setting the early season pace with 81 points in 5 games. Somerset close behind them with a game in hand on 74 points. I believe that it will be a close race between these two teams Somerset are playing Surrey at the moment and if they win that will go first. A bottom of the table clash is going on between Warickshire on 31 points and Nottinghnam on 23 points. Notts are currently 116-1 and they need 178 runs to get to safety. If Notts lose this then it will be a big setback. There’s 3 batsmen who are putting there hand up for England with some very good early season form. Gary Ballance, Dominic Sibley and George Bartlett. Ballance with 4 hundreds already this season has already been picked for England before. The question is will England go back to him after failing before. Unfortunatley he may be rememberd as a county bully. Dominic Sibley has been in good form being very consistent with 2 hundreds and a fifty. His strike rate of 37.60 may detour England from selecting him. Especially With England’s modern way. Finally one for the future Bartlett. His two hundreds coming against attacks with Broad and Morkel. Furthermore last year he scored a hundred at old trafford against Jimmy Anderson. If England are picking on character I feel they need to get him into there plans. I’m not saying that they should nessecelary pick him for the ashes but get him into a lions team. now for some stand out bowlers so far Lewis Gregory, Jack Leach and Craig Overton. Lets start with Gregory his wickets and runs have gone a long way to making somerset at the right end of the championship. I believe he should be in the England team ahead of Sam Curran. In addition to his bowling he provides quick runs for example against Notts he took on Stuart Broad hitting Broad for two sixes and getting a 50. Furthermore he can play a proper innings hitting a match altering 100 vs surreys attack. Jack Leach he has only played 4 games but when he has played he has contributed and one the game against notts. His 6-36 on a good pitch showed why he should be Englands only spinner in the ashes. I really do not not know why he did not play in the west Indies. Craig Overton for me he should be in the England team ahead of Stuart Broad. His 18 wickets coming at under 19. The last time he played for England he did well and now I feel he could do it again vs Australia. I believe that somerset will win the championship and Notts will go down.

  1. I would expect to see Gregory in the England test ranks sooner rather than later. Craig Overton and Jack Leach both already have England experience and would seem likely to add to that in the near future. I do not think Bartlett will get the call this season, but I would be surprised if he does not feature in a winter tour party, with a view to subsequent England selection in the not too distant future.

  2. I don’t think that Gregory will usurp others. We need variety in the attack. He’s a very good player but with Wood and Archer etc around Broad, Anderson etc, it’s difficult to breakthrough. Overton has chutzpah and deserves another go at some point. Sibley has done well when wickets have fallen around him. He’s scored hundreds last year and this, including one overseas. We can’t go into an Ashes with Denly at three!

How on earth Surrey and Notts are doing so bad with the players they have is absurd.

I think that you’re pretty much spot on with your assessments in this article. I don’t envisage a recall for Ballance but wouldn’t be against it. Root might push for him again and yes, Leach not playing in WI was odd.

    1. I feel in English conditions we do not need variety however overseas wood and Archer’s pace will be needed. Overton deserves it. I agree having an opener at 3 is better than having someone like Pope a number 6 bat at 3. I agree with you they have bought a lot of players and have the best overseas. Thank you and i agree with Balance and Leach
