Today South Africa take on the hosts ( and many would say the favourites) in the first game of the cricket world cup 2019. The game takes place at the oval and starts at 10:30.
Let’s have a look at the batting of the teams.
England bat all the way down but they have a settled and destructive top 6 of Roy, Bairstow, Root, Morgan, Stokes and Butler. In comparison, South Africa’s top 6 is Amla, De Kock, Markram, Faf du Plessis, Jp Duminy and David Miller. Both powerful and capable top 3’s. In my opinion, Englands holds more firepower. If AB Devilliers didn’t retire it may have been a different story. England’s top order takes this won.
Now the all-rounders England’s are Stokes, Woakes, Moen and as seen against the Afghans root is handy with the ball. Furthermore, Curran and Archer are no mugs with the bat. South Africa’s all-rounders are Andile Phehlukwayo and Chris Morris. Both bowling all-rounders which I feel gives England the edge when it comes to All rounders.
Lastly the bowlers. England’s attack contains Jofra Archer, Tom Curran, Chris Woakes, Moen, Rashid and stokes with Root if needed. To compare that against South Africa’s with Kagiso Rabada, Ngidi, Steyn Morris, Phehlukwayo and Imran Tahir. To me, South Africa’s pace bowlers are better than Englands with Rabada and Ngidi two of the best young bowlers in the world. To add to that you have Dale Steyn with all his experience. However, Moen and Rashid overpower Tahir in the middle overs. So in this one, it’s all equal.
I believe England will bowl first putting South Africa in. They will get around 300 with a hundred from Amla and contributions from De Kock and Miller. Archer taking the main wickets but being backed up by Rashid. Bairstow and Roy will set a platform in return but Morgan will win the game with a hundred.
