Somerset’s first game of the county championship against Kent. The first day was completely washed out due to rain and the first session the same. Kent won the toss and put Somerset into bat.
Azhar and Trescothick came into bat and were doing well and were untroubled until 30-0. Then Trescothick played across the line and was bowled for 10. The next wicket was Azhar who got out to a good ball from mines and was caught at second slip. Not long after Hildreth was caught flirting with a ball to far away from his body. A disappointing dismissal, 63-3. Abell started playing well with a good few fours and looking solid. But then after hitting a good four Byrom played a bad shot and was caught in the gully. Then Davies, he came in combining with Abell taking the score to 130-5 with a good 50 partnership. But then he did what Davies did and just hit it to point. Then Bartlet came in and looked troubled and was LBW from Claydon for 6. Lunch 140-5.
After lunch, Somerset came out and made a terrible start with Gregory falling to an over-expansive drive to a wide delivery. Then Abell the glue on 49 falling with a loose hook shot caught at long leg. Then at 145-8 Overton and Davey put on 20 before Davey was strangled down the leg side giving Claydon 5 wickets. Kent got the last wicket when Overton chipped a short ball back to Podmore. 171 all out, disappointing.
Kent came out and looked comfortable. Dickson was dropped at first slip from Hildreth, Gregory the bowler. They put on 71 before Craig Overton got Crawley out fending at a shortish one caught at second slip. Then the night watchman Podmore chipped Davey’s ball straight to Byrom at square leg. Close of play kent 84-2.
Somerset need a lot of wickets early to get back in the game.
